About the Maker

FUJICO Co., Ltd. has been a steel manufacturer for 70 years since we were founded in Kita-Kyushu in 1952. We have put our efforts into the development of environmental business products applying photocatalysts based on the techniques that we learned from such steel manufacturing. We are developing and manufacturing the AkariAir at our own company within the Kita-Kyushu Ecotown that faces the Genkai-Nada Sea.

This pentagonal AkariAir is quite uncommon for an air purifier. Since a pentagonal tube cannot be created as one part, there needs to be a break somewhere in the die or multiple discussion with the designer to achieve the design and so it was designed while repeatedly producing prototypes.

There were also continuous difficulties with the design of the internal structure. Air purifiers contain fans, and the fan is what draws in the nearby air with the air being cleaned by passing through filters such as photocatalysts. There also needs to be a structure to expel the air to outside. This must all be included within the slim pentagonal inside structure.

In addition, this time, we also include a “lamp” function, so there was the complexity of “applying LED illumination” at the air intake. Apart from the “color of the light” and “wavelength” we undertook optical design concerning the “way to shine the light” and by using a light guide plate had success in expression of a “uniform” light and a high quality light.

Apart from this we faced many challenges, but I think we were somehow able to achieve the combination of latest technology and high-quality design.

Message from the Designer

Us creatives are inspired by the special technical capabilities of the manufacturer i.e., core technologies. Our approach is to make as many end users as possible happy by drawing out the maximum functional capabilities of the core technologies while simultaneously planning and designing products to propose for new lifestyles.

The core technologies of FUJICO are founded in steelmaking technology of “light sanitization” known as sanitization technology through breakthrough photocatalysts. By focusing on “Light,” we came up with the idea of combining “illumination” and “Air Purification.” Furthermore, by making it portable, the concept was to provide end users with the “experience of carrying a quality space.”

We proposed one theme of pursuing great comfort of the touched texture and an easy to carry form, and as a result of in-depth investigation came up with the idea of adopting a shape with an odd number of sides. We thought the simplest pentagonal shape was suitable. Then, based on the oval pentagon that was derived from the soft curves of an oval square, we adjusted the balance to achieve the golden ratio, while linking seamlessly to a mathematical curvature as a whole to create a simple yet unique form.

For the air intake and outlets, we adopted a geometric design using a Penrose pattern in a pentagonal shape. This allowed for the addition of a decorative accent to the simple and soft form. This perforated design contributes to design for the way the light is illuminated as well as improving the capacity for air intake and outlet.

By combining multiple elements, we completed an innovative design that is suitable as an interior item that draws the front line for future air purifiers. Born from the enthusiasm and determination of all the developers on top of the sophisticated technological capabilities of FUJICO, I hope that everyone will have the opportunity to experience the “AkariAir.”

• 01：Is there a battery inside the product. Can it be charged?

  There is no internal battery. Please use by connecting to a PC or mobile battery. Alternatively, connect to 100V power supply with a store-bought USB AC adaptor.

• 02：Is a USB AC adaptor included?

  A USB AC adaptor is not provided. Please purchase a commercially-available AC adaptor (5V rated capacity with a PSE mark).

• 03：If using household electrical appliances (100V) with an AC adaptor, what will be the level of electricity cost?

  The target for electricity charges, if calculated at a unit price of 31 yen/kwh (including tax), based on 1 day usage (24 hours of continuous operation) are provided in the following table.

• 05：Does the filter need to be replaced?

  Photocatalyst filter does not need to be replaced. If the effect of the activated carbon filter is note restored even through cleaning (only for maintenance), we recommend replacement. (RRP 1,375 yen, including tax)

• 06：How large is the effective space?

  The assumptions are based on a space of approximately 4㎥ (the size of a large toilet in a single-story house, area of a remote work booth for 2 people located at stations, etc.).

• 07：Can it also be used in a car?

  We do not recommend using it inside a car as it may become extremely hot and the product may deform,etc.
  (When using, please be careful to keep it out of direct sunlight and do not leave it in the car.)
